Unit 1 Click Here for Language Learning

Teaching objectives:

l  Vocabulary:  click  embarrassed  intimidated  greeting   prestigious  passion  offense  

                ingredient  conviction  farewell  questionnaire  essay  furiously 

                have sth. In common (with sb./ sth.)             have no idea

                ask (sb.) for sth.          sign up (for sth.)             get off

l  Function: 

         Be familiar with different types of listening

         Identify new ways to make English studying more interesting

         Practice expressions of greetings and of farewells

         Help new Ss get acquainted with each other

         Understand the significance of the online learning 

         Conduct a series of listening and speaking activities related to the theme of this unit.

Key and difficult points:

1. The definition of "Click Here for Language Learning".

2. Pay attention to the differences between the traditional language studying and the online

       learning by the using of verbs like "helps", "offers" and "give".

3. Pay attention to the following expressions:

        Hi, what's up/ new/ happening?        Same here.

        Everything is all right.               The same as ever.

        Not much./ Nothing special./ Same old stuff.

        So long.        Catch you later.      Right. See you around.

Teaching procedures: (3 periods)

     1st period: Warming up; Listening (Listening practice)

     2nd period: Speaking (Oral English practice)

     3rd period: Listening and Speaking

Step 1 Warming up (27')

            In this section, we will get to know a new way of learning

Lead-in activities:

1. Introduction

       Teacher's self-introduction (including the ways of learning language)

       Ask Ss to work in pairs introducing themselves and talking about their own

            studying experience

       Share their answers with the whole class 

2. Showing different screenshots of websites to introduce a new way of studying and asking 

        Ss to try to identify them

3. Group discussion

Step 2 Listening Task (75')

    1) Listening skills:

         T: In this part, there are ten short conversations. You have to listen to them carefully in             

           order to understand them full. Besides, you should catch the questions after each     

           conversation.

         T: Before listening, you are supposed to read through the four options listed on your

           book and try to find out their differences and similarities. Because they can help you

           in listening as a clue. Now, you can start...

         Ss:...

v   Ask Ss to read through the four options listed on their books

v   Ask Ss try to find out the differences and similarities among those four options

v   Ask Ss try to guess the question according the the four choices  

v   Ask Ss to listen to the dialogs carefully and complete the tasks after each section

2) Listening (pp. 3--pp.6) (55')

   Task 1 Understanding ten short conversations

       Task 2 Understanding a long conversation

       Task 3 Understanding a passage

      For each part:

Ø  Ask Ss to listen to the conversations and then choose the best answer to 

        complete each of the questions

Ø  Check up the answers

Ø  Explain the words, expressions and the culture related to the theme

Ø  Listen again and get the Ss to pay attention to the key words

Ø  Listen for the third time after checking up

        Task 4 Understanding a movie speech (20')

Ø  Ask Ss to listen to the passage and then filling the blanks

Ø  Explain the words, expressions and the culture related to the theme

Ø  Listen to the speech again and try to find out Ell's attitude towards "passion"

Ø  Try to improve Ss' pronunciation, stress and intonation by imitating the

                  speech they heard before

Ø  Role play and get familiar with the speech

Step 3 Speaking (20')

v  Explain the useful expressions of greetings and farewells

         (In this section, expressions of greeting and farewells are either such functional   

          expressions or the expressions that help to form the framework of the models.)

v  Get the Ss to listen to the model dialogs one by one without looking at the textbook

v  Listen to the model dialogs once more and ask the Ss to imitate the dialog by looking at  

         the textbook

v  Ask Ss to practice the useful expressions they have just learned with their partners

v  Encourage Ss to try to create their own dialogs by practicing the Conversation

         Activity--Interview Bingo

v  Select two or three groups to present their own conversation in front of class

v  Ask Ss to work in pairs to finish the questionnaire on Page 10

v  Go around the class and help those who have difficulties in speaking practice 

Step 4 Listening and Speaking (25')

v  Ask Ss to go through the five items and try to underline the key words which are easy

         for them to get the point as soon as they hear the relevant sentences

v  Listen to the story once and encourage the Ss to finish each statements

v  Explain the instruction of this part and then divide the class into pairs to do Task 2

v  Walk around the class and give help as needed

Step 5 Summary (2')

Summarize the main idea of this unit: The definition of "Click Her for Language Learning"

                               A new way of study--online learning

                               Useful expressions of greetings and farewells

                              

Step 6 Assignments (1')

l  Finish the exercises on Page 12--14

l  Prepare a three-minute oral report on the topics on Page15 in the textbook
