Unit 3 Pros and Cons of Mixed Marriages
Teaching Objectives
Vocabulary: pros, cons, priest, grueling, celibacy, gallon, pint, quart, thermometer, Fahrenheit, Celsius
Function: Getting to know the marriages across cultures and nationalities
Talking about the volume of containers
Talking about distances
Talking about temperatures
Conduct listening and speaking activities related to the theme of this unit
Language points: what’s the volume of…?, how far is it from…to…?, what’s the temperature in…?
Teaching method: task-based language teaching method, communicative approach, audio-lingual method, etc.
Teaching aids: PPT, discs, video clips, audio tapes, U disk, etc.
Teaching procedures:
1. Warming up (10 minutes)
Ss will be asked to listen to a broadcaster introducing the program “Pros and Cons of Mixed Marriages” and arrange some points in order based upon the information they hear.
2. Listening (60 minutes)
Listening skills:
1). Ask Ss to read through the four options listed on their books
2). Ask Ss to find out the differences and similarities among the four options and guess the question according to the four options.
3). Ask Ss to listen to the dialogs and complete the tasks of each section
Task 1: Understanding Short Conversations (20 minutes)
Task 2: Understanding a Long Conversation (10 minutes)
Task 3: Understanding a Passage (minutes)
Task 4: Understanding a Movie Dialog (15 minutes)
3. Speaking
Task 1: Practicing Conversational Skills (15 minutes)
1. Introduce useful patterns for talking about the volume of containers,
distance and temperature
2. Listen to the model dialogs, imitate and practice the dialogs.
Task 2: Conversation Activity——On a Trip (15 minutes)
Work with a partner and plan an imaginary trip, using phrases for volume, distance and temperature before and during the trip. When exercise finished, ask Ss to report a summary of their trip.
Task 3: Pair Work——My Foreign Lover (20 minutes)
1. Work in groups. Ss are directed to select, at random, a nationality for an
imaginary spouse.
2. Discuss with your group the advantages and disadvantages of the arrangement.
3. Have a class discussion and then have some groups to give the presentation in
class.
4. Listening and speaking (25 minutes)
Story-retelling: Ss are to hear a story and fill in some blanks. Then work in pairs and retell the story .Each student in turn gives two sentences of the story.
5. Summary (5 minutes)
Summarize the main idea of this unit: expressions for talking about the volume of containers, distance and temperature.
6. Assignments
Supplementary listening and oral report.
