伊顿公学 Eton College

Eton, which was founded in 1440s, is said to have been the first grammar school to be called a “public school” because scholars could come to it fro any part of England and not, as was generally the case, just from the immediate neighborhood.

Founded in 1572, Harrow School is one of Britain’s leading independent schools, providing a high quality boarding school education for boys. The school combines academic excellence with an outstanding range of opportunities beyond the classroom. In 2003, Harrow School achieved great results in A-level exams: a 100%pass rate, 60%A’s and average grades of three A’s, while one in five sixth formers have achieved entry to either Oxford of Cambridge University.

Winchester College has a history of 600 years. Pupils are encouraged and expected to spend a certain number of hours a week on sport, cultural activities and service to the community. The school has superb, well-resourced libraries. The Winchester curriculum is designed to provide a demanding academic education for intelligent pupils. Most boys currently take eight or nine GCSE’s, mostly at the end of the third year. Some boys, however, will take GCSE’s early or bypass them in certain subjects, moving on to A-level in some subjects at the end of the third year.

 As a church school, Sherborne has a one hundred year history providing education for girls. Girls from 15 to 16 have 9 to 10 courses of GCSE and many will take two-year A-level courses in order to enter university.

Founded in 1875, The Leys now is an independent fully co-educational boarding and day school for over 520 pupils aged between 11 and 18. The majority of the pupils are Boarder, and those who come into school each day feel part of a boarding community, with all the advantages that brings.

Founded in 1564, Felsted School is an independent, co-educational, boarding and day school located in the picturesque Essex village of Felsted. There are approximately 430 pupils in the school between the ages of 13 and 18 of whom 170 are in the sixth-form. Almost all the sixth-form leavers embark on further or higher education. Music, art and drama activities flourish and there are over thirty societies. There is also a wide range of sporting opportunities for boys and girls, with school teams maintaining successful records. Students can also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

With a history of 400 years, Oakham School is a church school providing education for both boys and girls. Located in Oakham, is noted for its academic achievement. Each year, more than half of its pupils get an A or A+ in GCSE’s, more than 95% of its pupil enter universities for further education, while 20% of them go to Cambridge, Oxford or other famous universities.

高等教育 Higher Education

 Since 1970 there have consistently been more females than males involved in full-time higher education. Between 1980 and 1990 there was an overall increased of 30% in the number of students, mostly at polytechnics and colleges rather than universities. During the same period the number of mature students (those aged 21 and over when starting an undergraduate course and 25 and over when starting a postgraduate course) increased by 55%.

牛津大学 Oxford

The university of Oxford was the first university to be established in Britain. Dating from the 12th century, it is organized as a federation of colleges which are governed by their own teaching staff known as “ Fellows.” The oldest college, University College, was founded in 1249. Other notable colleges include All Souls (founded in 1438), Christ Church (founded in 1546 by Cardinal Wolsey), the college chapel of which is also Oxford Cathedral, and Lady Margaret Hall (founded in 1878), which was the first women’s college.

 Today Oxford University is made up of 35 separate colleges, of which two are for women students only, and the rest take both women and men.

In 1208, scholars running away from riots in Oxford set up the first academic community in Cambridge, The university is also organizes as a federation of colleges; the oldest, Peterhouse, dates form 1284. The largest college, Trinity, was founded by King Henry III 1546.

 Cambridge is in the first rank of universities worldwide, Its colleges, departments, faculties and schools attract the best academic minds and the most talented students. Cambridge’s contribution to teaching and research is matched by its commitment to sport, its museums and the performing arts.

威尔士拉姆皮特大学 The university of Wales, Lampeter

Founded in 1822, Lampeter is the oldest university institution in Britain after the ancient universities of Oxford and Cambridge and several ancient universities in Scotland. It is a compact and intimate campus which is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Lampeter has a special focus on the humanities and social sciences. With under 2000 students, Lampeter enjoys the status of being the smallest university in Europe. Originally students studied mainly theology and the arts; today the selection is wider and includes information technology and more social sciences.

考文垂的的士司机！（2002年9月26日）

Soon after arriving in Coventry from China, I tool great interest in the taxi men here. At night, when they are not sure if I really need a taxi, they will stop about 10 meters ahead of me and wait patiently, never sounding their horns, nor coming nearer me to ask . In case I pay no attention to them, they will simply ride away, or flash their lights thoughtfully, to attract my attention. Very interesting. And in such a gentlemanly way!

从中国来到考文垂后不久，我对这里的的士司机产生了浓厚兴趣。晚上，当他们不太确定我是否要乘的士时，他们会在我前面10米左右停下来耐心等我，从来不会按喇叭，也不会靠近我询问。如果我不理会他们，他们只是把车开走，或者体贴地闪着车灯吸引我的注意。很有趣。这种绅士的方式！
